The Great Wave

This painting is called The Great Wave, and was painted by Katsushika Hokusai in 1829-33. This is one of the best known examples of Japanese art. This painting was printed using carved wooden blocks. One by one, the blocks were covered in ink, and paper was pressed onto them. This picture was proved so popular during the time of the printing the blocks used to make the painting were wore out. The printing process restricted the number of colors and shades that could have been used. This painting contains only seven different colors and even shows the white from the original paper showing through.
