The Arnolfini Portrait

This is the Arnolfini Portrait, by Jan van Eyck. It was painted in 1434. This was one of the first pictures to be made with oil paints and it is still incredibly lifelike. This picture has many hints of religious symbols. This includes the set of rosary beads by the mirror in the middle of the painting, and the single burning candle in the chandelier which was often used to suggest God's presence. The dog also in the middle symbolizes love and faithfulness.
